What a gutter guard does. A gutter guard (or leaf guard) is a cover that sits on top of your eavestrough. Water still runs in, but leaves, needles and roof grit stay out, so the trough and downspouts keep flowing.

Why it matters in Calgary. A blocked eavestrough overflows in a summer storm and, in winter, holds water that freezes at the roof edge. That ice can back up under the shingles and turns into the ice dams many Calgary homes fight every chinook. Clear eavestroughs are one of the simplest ways to avoid it.
