See Full BioEvery winter, we get calls from Calgary homeowners with a leaking roof and the same panicked question: "Can you guys actually fix this in December?"
The short answer is: yes, but with important qualifications. Let us be completely honest with you about what's possible in a Calgary winter.
What Alberta Cold Does to Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles contain a self-sealing adhesive strip on the bottom that activates with heat. In warm weather (above 10°C), this strip bonds to the shingle below within days of installation, making it wind-resistant.
In cold weather, this seal doesn't activate during installation. The shingle lies flat, but it remains vulnerable to wind uplift until the spring warmth finally seals it.
This doesn't mean winter roofing is impossible. It means your installer needs to take specific precautions.
What We Can Do in Winter
✅ Emergency Repairs (Any Temperature)
If you have an active leak, a tree through your roof, or storm damage exposing your attic to the elements — we fix it. Period. We will come out in -30°C if needed.
Emergency repairs include:
- Temporary tarping (stops all water damage immediately)
- Spot shingle replacement with hand-sealing
- Ice dam removal and prevention membranes
- Flashing re-sealing around chimneys and vents
✅ Full Replacements on Chinook Days
Calgary Chinooks are rare gifts. When temperatures spike to 5–12°C mid-winter, experienced crews can absolutely do a full replacement — and we'll hand-seal every shingle tab rather than relying on the self-seal strip.
✅ Flat/Commercial Roofing
SBS torch-on flat roofing systems are actually designed to be installed in cold weather. The torch application is unaffected by ambient temperatures.
What We Recommend Against in Winter
❌ Full Replacement Below -15°C
At these temperatures, shingles become brittle and can crack when bent. Our installers will tell you honestly when conditions are unsafe for a proper installation.
❌ Layovers (Roofing Over Existing Shingles)
Never acceptable — in any season. Some winter contractors offer to "roof over" your existing shingles faster and cheaper. Don't accept this. It masks deck damage and voids your material warranty.
The Honest Recommendation
If your roof is failing but not actively leaking:
- Call us now for an assessment. We'll tell you if it can safely wait until spring or needs immediate action.
- Consider emergency tarping as a cost-effective winter bridge that buys you time until ideal installation weather.
- Book your spring installation early — our calendar fills up fast in March and April. Booking now locks in your spot.
