This article is for you if…

  • Homeowners noticing peeling paint on their roof overhangs
  • People feeling cold drafts or diagnosing attic mold
  • Calgarians planning a full exterior siding and gutter upgrade

Quick Answer

The Fascia is the straight vertical board where your gutters are attached, protecting the ends of your roof rafters. The Soffit is the perforated horizontal board below the overhang, acting as the primary intake vent pulling fresh air into your attic.

When homeowners discuss an exterior renovation, the conversation revolves entirely around dramatic visible features: the color of the new James Hardie siding or the sleek modern profile of a new metal roof.

Almost nobody talks about the Soffit and Fascia.

Despite being less glamorous, these two architectural components are the literal lungs and armor of your roof's perimeter. If either component fails, your brand new roof is guaranteed to suffer from structural rot, mold, or catastrophic ice dams.

If you are planning an exterior upgrade in Calgary, here is exactly what these components do, and why they matter so intensely to the survival of your home.

What is the Fascia?

Stand in your driveway and look up at your gutters. The gutters are firmly nailed or screwed into a long, straight vertical board that runs horizontally along the entire lower edge of the roof.

That board is the Fascia.

The Job of the Fascia

The fascia board serves as the terminating armor of your roof. It covers up the exposed, vulnerable ends of your wooden roof trusses.

  • Structural Support: The fascia carries the immense weight of your gutters. During a Calgary winter, those gutters can easily become packed with hundreds of pounds of solid ice. The fascia must remain structurally rigid to prevent the gutters from ripping off the house.
  • Weather Sealing: It creates an impenetrable barrier against horizontal rain, wind, and determined pests attempting to burrow into your attic.

Why Fascia Fails

Older Calgary homes feature fascia boards made of raw, painted wood. Over time, heat and moisture cause the paint to peel and the wood to rot openly. Modern exterior renovations completely solve this. Today, we wrap the entire wooden fascia board in Custom Aluminum Cladding. This custom-bent metal encases the wood entirely, rendering it 100% waterproof and maintenance-free forever. (Wondering if you're already at this point? See do I need new gutters and fascia.)

What is the Soffit?

Look directly underneath the overhang of your roof (the eaves) from the ground upward. You will see a horizontal plane bridging the gap between the exterior wall of your house and the back of the fascia board.

That horizontal plane is the Soffit.

The Job of the Soffit

The soffit is literally the "lungs" of your home's attic. If you look closely, high-quality residential soffit is fully or partially perforated with thousands of tiny vent holes.

As wind brushes against the side of your house, it pushes freezing cold, fresh air upward through these perforations. This fresh air travels straight up the inside of your roof deck, aggressively cooling the plywood, before exiting through the exhaust vents at the absolute peak of the roof.

Why Soffit Fails

Without fully ventilated soffits, a roof cannot breathe.

  • The Insulation Blocker: The most common failure is human error. Careless insulation contractors often blow massive amounts of cellulose directly into the eaves, physically burying the soffit vents. The fresh air cannot enter.
  • The Solid Soffit Trap: Some older homes use solid plywood for soffits. Because no air can circulate, hot, humid air becomes permanently trapped inside the attic, melting snow on the roof (causing ice dams) and spawning toxic black mold on the lumber — the same airflow issue covered in why roof ventilation is crucial.

The Total Exterior Package

Soffits, Fascia, Gutters, and Siding do not operate independently. They form a contiguous barrier against the horrific extremes of Alberta's climate.

If water gets behind a piece of failing siding, it runs down and rots the soffit. If the gutters overflow, they splash back and destroy the fascia. The system only works if every component is meticulously sealed together by experts.

Our Honest Recommendation

Never install brand new gutters onto old, peeling wooden fascia.

The Professional Upgrade: If you are investing in a seamless gutter replacement, you should always invest the small additional cost to have the crew clad your old fascia boards in fresh, color-matching aluminum, and install high-ventilation aluminum soffits simultaneously to ensure your attic breathes perfectly.

A fully clad overhang never needs to be painted, will never rot, and guarantees the structural integrity of your roof for decades.
