1. Maintaining Premium Vinyl Siding
Vinyl siding is beloved primarily because the color is extruded completely through the panel. It cannot chip, it cannot rust, and it will undeniably never require paint. However, vinyl does carry a static charge that naturally attracts atmospheric dust, pollen, and road grime.

- ✅ Do: Use a standard garden hose equipped with a soft-spray nozzle and a bucket of warm water mixed with a mild, non-abrasive detergent (like Dawn dish soap). Start at the bottom of the wall and work your way up using a soft-bristled brush on an extension pole to loosen heavy dirt, then rinse from the top down.
- ❌ Do NOT: Blast your siding upward with a high-pressure power washer. Vinyl panels are installed to overlap and shed water flowing downward (like rain). If you blast high-pressure water directly up into the overlapping seams or the weep holes, you will force gallons of water behind the siding, soaking the house wrap and risking interior mold.
Heat and Chemical Warnings Vinyl's greatest weakness is heat. Ensure your barbecue grill is kept at least three to five feet away from the exterior wall to prevent the siding from warping or melting. - ✅ Do: A gentle rinse with a garden hose every 6 months is usually all it takes to keep Hardie boards looking immaculate. If a section is particularly dirty, a soft cloth and mild detergent will suffice.
- ❌ Do NOT: Never use an aggressive pressure washer. High-PSI washing can actually strip the baked-on ColorPlus paint right off the cement board, immediately voiding the manufacturer's finish warranty.
The Critical Caulking Inspection Unlike vinyl panels which overlap freely, James Hardie boards butt up against trim pieces, windows, and corners. These joints are meticulously sealed during installation using high-grade, exterior-rated elastomeric caulking.
While the fiber cement board itself will easily last 50 years, the caulking will not. Calgary's severe freeze-thaw cycles brutalize exterior caulking.
